Our Verdict: Wagner’s Cracked Corn

To sum things up:

One of the biggest draws to Wagner’s Cracked Corn as opposed to Morning Song Cracked Corn Wildlife Food is the difference in price. You’ll pay less for a 10-pound bag of Wagner’s than you would for a 5-pound bag of Morning Song Cracked Corn.

Or to put it another way, Wagner’s is incredibly affordable.

I also like the product from Wagner’s because it blends very well with their black oil bird seeds and their wild bird seed blend. Kaytee Cracked Corn is certainly capable of blending well with other bird seeds too, but my favorite winged friends seem to like Wagner’s better.

Another thing…

This food is a big hit amongst a wide variety of birds and this especially includes perching birds and songbirds. And if you like feeding ground dwelling animals, the squirrels, rabbits, and other creatures seem to enjoy cracked corn a great deal too.

I recommend feeding the ground dwellers in a different location in your backyard and keep their food away from the bird feeders. Why? This gives the birds peace of mind and it keeps their bird feeders free from unwanted intrusions.

Also, I noticed the Morning Song Cracked Corn and Kaytee Cracked Corn were both a little too dusty and extra pulverized for my liking. This even happens to Wagner’s a little bit, but the other two brands seemed to suffer from this fate a lot worse.

Our Analysis, Comparisons & Test Results

As I mentioned, during the testing and analysis phase of this review, I not only tested Wagner’s Cracked Corn, but I also tested and analyzed two other types of cracked corn at the same time.

The other brands that I concurrently analyzed were:

  • Morning Song Cracked Corn Wildlife Food
  • Kaytee Cracked Corn

Why did I test multiple products at the same time?

I wanted to see how the birds reacted to each option. This helps me determine which product excels in the area taste and the levels of energy that it provides to boot.

I spend roughly 2 weeks evaluating each product to get a good feel for it. And after I tested all three of these products, I then analyzed my results and used them to formulate my final opinions.

In the end, I determined that Wagner’s Cracked Corn was the superior product out of the three.

How did I come to this conclusion? You’ll learn the method to my madness below.

Energy

From an Energy standpoint, I gave this product a healthy 90 out of 100 rating. And I feel pretty good about this determination because the wild birds in my backyard always seem to be zipping around all over the place after they eat it.

But that’s only part of my reasoning…

I also gave it a higher rating for energy because it contains some vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. And even better, I rarely feed this product to my birds as a standalone option.

How so?

I actually like to mix it in my bird feeder with other healthy seeds. I feel the birds really enjoy eating this along with black oil sunflower seeds and mixed bird seed.

Believe it or not, as a standalone product it doesn’t have a lot of protein and healthy fat. It contains pretty good moisture levels at 12%, but ultimately it has fewer energizing nutrients than other oily bird seeds that pack an energetic punch.

Regardless, the birds seem to really enjoy it and they appear to have a boost of energy after they eat it, so I’m definitely going to agree with my initial assessment and maintain that this is a high energy bird food that they also happen to want to devour all the time!

Freshness

As far as Freshness is concerned, I rated this product with a very respectable 80 out of 100, which is a great rating in my book.

Why didn’t I give it a perfect score?

The biggest reason that I lowered the score by 2 points is a review that I read from an unhappy customer.

In this review, I learned that the customer was unhappy with his purchase the last few times that he bought this cracked corn. He said that the cracked corn from Wagner’s had a funky smell to it on more than one occasion.

Did this ever happen to me? No, it didn’t. I never opened up a bag of Wagner’s Cracked Corn and noticed a funky smell.

So, I’m not going to completely dismiss this product because I always had a great experience whenever I purchased it. At the same time, I cannot ignore an unhappy customer so I had to knock off 2 points and also bring this freshness issue to your attention.

After reading dozens of reviews, I can thankfully claim that I only stumbled upon freshness issues on one occasion. So, like me, the other customers do not seem to have this problem.

As an aside, I also never had freshness troubles with Kaytee Cracked Corn or Morning Song Cracked Corn either.

Messiness

From the perspective of Messiness, I gave Wagner’s Cracked Corn a satisfactory rating of 70 out of 100, which as we know is definitely not a perfect 100.

What made me lower the score?

Honestly, this is possibly a terrible reason to lower the score but I chose to follow my instincts and move ahead with this particular piece of analysis anyway.

In many cases, when feeding the birds Wagner’s Cracked Corn, you will actually grab handfuls of it and scatter it on the ground for the birds and other ground dwelling animals to feast on.

As you can imagine, this can get really messy at times! And maybe it’s an unfair assessment since I do not necessarily have to throw the pieces of cracked corn on the ground to feed the birds. I can easily put it on a plate or on a tray bird feeder.

Even so…

The birds tend to knock the cracked corn off of the tray feeder while eating it. This is actually a testament to the taste and quality of the product. They eat it so fast because they love it so much and they get it all over the place!

Nutrient Quality

For the category Nutrient Quality, I gave this product a 90 out of 100 rating, which might be overselling it somewhat.

Believe it or not, I may be making a mistake by rating it so highly. Although, the nutrient quality isn’t poor by any stretch of the imagination. But some nutrients are available to a lesser degree when compared to other products like safflower seeds, sunflower seeds, and Nyjer seeds.

Here’s the breakdown of the overall nutrient quality that the birds will ingest after eating this product:

  • 7% Protein
  • 3% Fat
  • 5% Fiber
  • 12% Moisture

As a comparison, the nutrient breakdown of Wagner’s Finches Supreme Wild Bird Food consists of:

  • 10% Protein
  • 10% Fat
  • 15% Fiber
  • 13% Moisture

Clearly, the Wagner’s Finches Food definitely has a more favorable nutrient profile. But that’s not to say that cracked corn doesn’t possess any nutrients because that would be a lie. The nutrients are definitely there and they’re healthy for the birds, but they’re only available in a more limited supply.

In the end, I guess a 90 out of 100 is a satisfactory rating when you consider the comparison that I shared with you above.

Taste & Enjoyment

I rated Wagner’s Cracked Corn with a highly respectable 90 out of 100 rating, which I definitely feel this product lives up to by a wide margin.

You see, although I obviously am not a bird and I’ve never eaten this product, I can tell you beyond reason that the wild birds in my backyard positively love this cracked corn.

And to be fair, they also love Morning Song and Kaytee cracked corn too. But out of these three options, the birds in my yard seemed to devour this brand faster than the rest.

It was really amazing to watch.

I could scatter a handful of cracked corn on the ground and the birds would swoop down from the trees and instantly grab pieces and fly away. If I dropped 25 pieces, as an example, they’d all be gone in a matter of minutes.

In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find another ingredient that wild birds love more! They like fatty sunflower seeds a great deal because it gives them ample energy, but they love their sweet tasting corn treats a great deal as well.

Wagner’s Cracked Corn FAQs:

Is Wagner’s Cracked Corn 100% Free Of Preservatives?

Here’s what I can tell you…

According to the packaging, it says very clearly that the food within the bag is considered 100% pure corn. Although the word preservative isn’t mentioned anywhere, you have to assume that the corn is free of preservatives since they haven’t talked about it anywhere on the packaging, the bag, or the ingredients list.

My personal feeling is that this cracked corn is definitely 100% preservative free. I can tell you beyond the shadow of a doubt that when I feed it to the birds in my neighborhood, they absolutely adore it and can’t wait to gobble it up.

Does Wagner’s Cracked Corn Contain A Healthy Amount Of Protein?

Here’s the truth of the matter…

Wagner’s Cracked Corn does not contain a massive amount of protein by any stretch of the imagination. But this is to be expected since corn is the main source of calories, vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in this food item.

All in all, according to the packaging it says that the cracked corn from Wagner’s contains a total of 7% protein. As an example, mealworms contain 47% protein, which is definitely a lot and on the higher side of things.

On the other hand…

Wagner’s 100% Black Oil Sunflower Seeds contain 14% protein, which is half the amount that you get in cracked corn.

Overall, the protein is less than most other nutrition sources available for your favorite backyard birds.

Do Cracked Corn Pieces Typically Tend To Float?

Unfortunately, for the most part with very few exceptions, the small cracked corn pieces are not going to float. If you were to throw a handful of them into a pond, as an example, the pieces of cracked corn would eventually sink to the bottom unless fish, ducks, or other birds decide to eat them before they descend underwater.

Are you hoping to feed ducks with this cracked corn? A smart way to accomplish your task is to put them on a floating tray or plate. Then the ducks could swim over to the tray holding the cracked corn and eat it at their leisure whenever they get hungry.

Our Final Verdict: Wagner’s Cracked Corn

I’m very thankful that you found your way to this Wagner’s Cracked Corn review blog post. Thanks for taking the time to read it and I hope it provided all of the information that you desire to learn.
