Our Verdict: Wagner’s Deluxe Blend Wild Bird Food

You might be wondering why I chose this particular product as my favorite mixed blend of wild bird food. I can tell you the following with complete confidence:

At first, I didn’t even think this seed combination was going to be a good fit for my backyard birds. But I tried it anyway because I had heard good things. Thankfully, I’m now ecstatic that I gave it a fair shot because so many new and exciting songbirds visit my backyard every day.

Seemingly out of the blue, I’m beginning to notice more nuthatches, juncos, chickadees, and titmice. And the only variance that I can use to explain this change of pace is the new bird seed that I’ve been putting out.

Besides that…

This formula has 12 ingredients, which makes it very attractive to a wide range of different birds. And the varying seeds and high-quality grain means this food is healthy and produces a great deal of energy for the widest variety of birds.

And I want you to know that I tested this wild seed blend with two other popular brands before I ultimately determined that it was my favorite. The other brands that I tried include:

  • Pennington Classic Wild Bird Feed and Seed
  • Harvest Seed & Supply Birder’s Medley Wild Bird Food

These seeds were great in their own way, but they didn’t quite measure up to the deluxe blend from Wagner’s.

Our Analysis, Comparisons & Test Results

Let’s keep it simple…

I ran testing, analysis, and comparisons on this product, Wagner’s Deluxe Blend Wild Bird Food, and the products from Pennington and Harvest Seed & Supply that I mentioned above.

After testing each product for a few weeks, I came to some interesting conclusions that I’d like to share with you today. Overall, the results were very positive for the product created by Wagner’s, but the other two products definitely had their bright spots as well.

And on a side note, I’m not here to speak negatively about any particular company or product. That isn’t what I do. I just rate these products based on personal experience and information gathered from YouTube videos and previous customers.

My goal is simple…

I aim to figure out how well a product measures up based on freshness, nutrient quality, energy, and other important categories. So, that’s the type of information that I’ll cover for you right now.

Energy

In the category labeled Energy, I gave Wagner’s Deluxe Blend Wild Bird Food an 80 out of 100 rating.

Why not a perfect 100 out of 100, you might be wondering?

Simply put, I knocked off a few points because out of the 12 ingredients in this formula, at least one of the ingredients isn’t the most nutritious known to man.

But don’t worry…

Wagner’s doesn’t overload their products with unhealthy ingredients. This bag of seeds contained a fairly balanced and even blend, with the exception of healthy sunflower seeds which were the most prominent of all.

But…

As I said, this product contains red milo. Although it certainly isn’t unhealthy in any way, it also doesn’t possess any major nutritional value. Some people aren’t too thrilled with red millet either, which is also present in this formula.

But the other ingredients certainly make up for it.

Besides the red milo and red millet, this product also contains white millet, cracked corn, a few different types of sunflower seeds including black oil sunflower seeds, sunflower chips, and striped sunflower seeds.

Overall, the high-quality sunflower seeds make up 40% of this mixed blend, and these health promoting seeds contain ample energy.

So, your wild birds will experience a nice healthy energy boost. They just won’t get it from every single aspect of this blend.

Freshness

The category Freshness is another story altogether. I gave this product a perfect 100 out of 100 rating because it really excelled in this area.

As I’ve said, I tested this wild bird food blend along with Pennington Classic Wild Bird Feed and Harvest Seed & Supply Birder’s Medley and I discovered some interesting things.

For starters, I can proudly say that Wagner’s Deluxe Wild Bird Food was always perfectly fresh. It always looked and smelled good and it was never wet, clumped, or soggy in any way whatsoever.

Thankfully, I never received clumpy or soggy bird seed from the other companies either, which is certainly a good thing. But they did lack freshness on occasion, which means the product from Wagner’s was more superior for this category.

And the best part?

My research basically confirmed my hypothesis. Unfortunately, other customers have had a less than stellar experiences as far as freshness is concerned with the other two brands.

And that’s not to say that Wagner’s has never suffered from freshness difficulties because that wouldn’t be true as well. But I personally never experienced any freshness issues, which is what I’m basing my perfect score on.

Messiness

The Messiness category can be a little tricky depending on how you look at things. I look at things from an honest and truthful perspective, which is how I intend to share my point of view.

So, is this product messy?

It certainly can be. There’s no question about it. The birds seem to love this food a lot and they tend to devour it very quickly.

Do you know what that leads to? That leads to a mess below the bird feeder from time to time.

But here’s the interesting thing that I noticed…

Believe it or not, I never clean up the mess. Do you want to know why?

I leave it there because ground dwelling animals like squirrels and raccoons also really love these bird seeds. The same holds true for cats and dogs as well. (Please read my warning in Nutrient Quality)

If you have ground dwelling animals frequenting your backyard, you can leave the messy bird seeds for them to clean up and they’ll absolutely adore you for it!

Nutrient Quality

From a Nutrient Quality standpoint, I gave this product another really high score by giving it a perfect 100 out of 100.

There’s a method to my madness, don’t you worry!

I gave it such a high score because the combination of these seeds creates a very healthy nutrient profile. It breaks down in the following ways:

26% Crude Fiber
13% Crude Protein
16% Crude Fat
13% Moisture

At the end of the day, this blend of healthy nutrients is perfect for the amazing birds that like to frequent my backyard. A list of ingredients that makes up this healthy blend includes:

Canary Seed
Cracked Corn
Black Oil Sunflower Seeds
Sunflower Chips
Striped Sunflower Seeds
Tree Nuts
Red Millet
Red Milo
Safflower Seeds
Peanut Kernels
Nyjer Seed
Raisins

The great thing about getting nutrients from so many different sources is this wild blend provides healthy meals to a wide variety of birds. They can pick and choose their favorite seeds, nuts, and raisins at their discretion and receive a healthy meal directly from your bird feeders.

WARNING: Raisins (and grapes) are toxic to some animals and pose a very real threat to the health and well-being of all dogs and other pets. Keep your dog or cat away from this mixed blend because it contains raisins, although they’re in limited supply. Toxicity from grapes and raisins can lead to kidney failure mere hours after ingesting them.

Taste & Enjoyment

For the category Taste & Enjoyment, I also awarded Wagner’s Deluxe Blend Wild Bird Food with a flawless 100 out of 100 rating.

In this situation, I let the birds do the talking for me. I obviously WILL NOT eat this product because it wasn’t designed for human consumption! 😊

But the birds love it. And they can’t seem to get enough of it. That tells me that it’s such a great product because my backyard birds swarm to it so often that I have to refill my feeders quickly whenever I put this bird seed out.

Guess what?

I can’t make the same claim for Pennington Classic or the Birder’s Medley from Harvest Seed & Supply.

Now don’t get me wrong…

The birds liked these other products as well and they definitely enjoyed eating them. But they didn’t devour either of them with the same dedication and gusto that they attacked my bird feeders with whenever I filled it with Wagner’s Wild Seed Blend.

Hopefully you understand my reasoning. I let the birds decide which product tasted the best based on their immense enjoyment.

Wagner’s Deluxe Blend Wild Bird Food FAQs:

Do Squirrels Like Eating Wagner’s Deluxe Blend Wild Bird Food?

The short answer is yes. Squirrels absolutely enjoy eating the brand of bird food. This can be a curse or a blessing depending on how you look at it.

First off, you’ll need to buy a squirrel-proof feeder to keep the squirrels out of your bird feed. Otherwise, they’ll make a beeline for your bird feeder every time you put this wild bird food out for your favorite backyard birds.

Or you can look at it this way…

The squirrels will gladly clean up the mess left behind whenever your favorite birds spill some seed that drops below the bird feeder. These furry little guys will happily gobble up any crumbs that the birds don’t eat, which will definitely cut down on the mess!

You can also feed the squirrels if you like! Set up a separate feeding station far away from the bird feeders so they do not disturb your fine feathered friends when it’s time for them to eat.

Do Birds Enjoy Eating Every Ingredient Or Do They Avoid Certain Ingredients Like Cracked Corn Or Millet?

Believe it or not, Wagner’s Deluxe Blend Wild Bird Food is balanced in the right proportions. There is very little millet or cracked corn, so the bits and pieces of it in this mixture always seem to get eaten.

The rest of the ingredients are balanced pretty proportionally. The only other exception is this blend contains a lot of sunflower seeds, which the birds absolutely adore.

Does Wagner’s Deluxe Blend Wild Bird Food Lump Together After It Gets Wet?

Actually, you’d think it would get very lumpy after it gets wet but this isn’t the case. On the other hand, I don’t want you to think it’s okay to get your birdseed wet without suffering any negative consequences.

Guess what? If this blend gets wet it will begin to get soft. And if it stays soft and wet for a long time, it will begin to develop mold.

You do not want to feed birds with moldy bird seeds. This is incredibly unhealthy so keep your feeders protected from water to prevent the development of moldy bird seeds.
